Sierra Nevada is a huge granite mountain range in eastern California. It is more than 400 miles (640 kilometers) long. Its width ranges from about 40 to 70 miles (64 to 110 kilometers). The range is gently tilted to the west. Close to its eastern edge are several peaks that rise more than 14,000 feet (4,270 meters). The highest is Mount Whitney (14,494 feet, or 4,418 meters).
