Falls, Sioux << soo >> (pop. 192,517; met. area pop. 286,434), is the largest city and leading commercial center in South Dakota. It lies at the falls of the Big Sioux River. The city’s products include crushed rock, electromagnetic equipment, fabricated steel, high-altitude balloons, millwork, packaged meats, and processed dairy foods. It is also the headquarters for a number of credit-card companies. The city has several hospitals and the state prison. It is the home of Augustana University, the University of Sioux Falls, and the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science.
