Soft-coated wheaten terrier is a breed of dog that originated in Ireland. Irish farmers used it to drive cattle, to guard houses and barns, and to kill rats and other pests. This terrier is related to the Irish and Kerry blue terriers.
Soft-coated wheaten terrier puppies are dark brown or brownish-red. The adults have a rich wheat-colored coat of soft, wavy hair. In many of these terriers, the tails are docked (cut short). The dogs stand about 19 inches (48 centimeters) high and weigh from 35 to 45 pounds (16 to 20 kilograms).
