Sosa, Sammy (1968-…), became one of the most exciting home-run hitters in baseball history. Sosa was the first player in major league history to hit at least 60 home runs in three different seasons. He hit 66 in 1998, 63 in 1999, and 64 in 2001. Sosa hit 50 home runs in 2000, the most in the major leagues. He led the National League with 49 home runs in 2002. In 2007, Sosa became the fifth player in major league history to hit 600 career home runs.
Sosa was selected as the National League’s Most Valuable Player for the 1998 season. He led the major leagues in runs batted in (RBI’s) in 1998 with 158 and in 2001 with 160, the third most in a season in modern National League history. Sosa played right field for most of his career and also became a designated hitter in 2005. He batted and threw right-handed.
Samuel Peralta Sosa was born on Nov. 12, 1968, in San Pedro de Macorís in the Dominican Republic. He started playing major league baseball in 1989 with the Texas Rangers. He was traded to the Chicago White Sox later in 1989 and then to the Chicago Cubs in 1992. The Cubs traded Sosa to the Baltimore Orioles in 2005. Sosa did not play major league baseball in 2006. He joined the Texas Rangers for the 2007 season, his last season in the major leagues.
