South Carolina, University of, is a state-supported system of higher education. Its main campus is in Columbia. The system also includes other major campuses in Aiken, Beaufort, and Spartanburg. The university was chartered in 1801 as South Carolina College. In 1906, it became the University of South Carolina. Athletic teams at the main campus in Columbia are called the Gamecocks.
