Stockton, Frank Richard (1834-1902), was an American author who wrote humorous short stories and novels. His best-known work is the short story “The Lady or the Tiger?” (1882), which is famous for its unusual ending. Most of Stockton’s fiction is based on actual events and concerns polite, well-mannered people. He retold the stories with comic invention and genial good humor.
Critics consider Stockton’s best work to be The Casting Away of Mrs. Lecks and Mrs. Aleshine (1886). This comic novel tells about two middle-aged women who are shipwrecked and set up housekeeping on a deserted island. Stockton’s first popular work was the comic fantasy Rudder Grange (1879).
Stockton was born on April 5, 1834, in Philadelphia. In his first major job, he worked as a wood engraver. He died on April 20, 1902.
