Sultan is a title given to some Muslim rulers. The title of sultan has been used since about A.D. 1000. In the past, it described Muslim rulers with complete political and military power. The Turkish rulers of the Seljuk and Ottoman empires were called sultans. Today, sultan is used as a title of honor for some Muslim rulers, though many of them have little real power.
