Summer is the warmest season of the year. The Northern Hemisphere has summer weather from late June through August. In the Southern Hemisphere, summer weather lasts from late December through February. People living in the tropics rarely consider summer a distinct season because the temperatures there change little from month to month. Summer’s highest temperatures usually occur in the middle of each continent. Days of summerlike weather may also occur in mid- autumn, an event sometimes called Indian summer.
During summer in North America, warm winds carry moisture north from the Gulf of Mexico. These winds can bring warm, humid weather to much of the region east of the Rocky Mountains and as far north as Canada. In the southeastern United States, afternoon thunderstorms are common during summer.
