Tallahassee, << `tal` uh HAS ee >> (pop. 196,169; met. area pop. 384,298), is the capital of Florida. It lies in the northwest part of the state, near the Georgia border. The name Tallahassee comes from an Indian word meaning old town.
The economy of Tallahassee is based on government activities. The city’s industries include printing, publishing, seafood processing, and the production of computers and wood products. Tallahassee is the home of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and Florida State University.
Tallahassee has been the capital since 1824, two years after Florida became a U.S. territory. A new high-rise State Capitol and other new state government office buildings were built in the late 1900’s. Tallahassee has a commission-manager government and is the seat of Leon County.
