Tenniel, << TEHN yuhl, >> Sir John (1820-1914), an English cartoonist and book illustrator, illustrated Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass (1872). He also became famous for his political cartoons in Punch, a magazine for which he worked for about 50 years after 1850. His work was admired for its originality, dignity, and excellent technique. Tenniel and other artists of his time helped the United Kingdom retain its leadership in the field of book illustration. He was born on Feb. 28, 1820, in London. He died on Feb. 25, 1914.
