Texas, University of

Texas, University of, is a state-supported system of higher education. Its official name is the University of Texas System. The system consists of nine academic institutions and six health-related institutions. The system’s administrative offices are located in Austin. University of Texas at Arlington

opened in 1895 as a private college. It became part of the University of Texas System in 1965.

University of Texas at Austin,

the system’s flagship institution, was founded in 1883. The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum is on the Austin campus. Major research facilities include the McDonald Observatory at Mount Locke and the Marine Science Institute at Port Aransas. The university’s athletic teams are called the Longhorns.

University of Texas at Brownsville

is open to graduate and upper-level undergraduate students. The school was originally a study center of Pan American University, which was based in Edinburg, Texas. It became a university in 1977 and joined the University of Texas System in 1991.

University of Texas at Dallas

is in the Dallas suburb of Richardson. Formerly a private research institution, the University of Texas at Dallas was created in 1969.

University of Texas at El Paso

opened in 1913 as the Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy. It became part of the University of Texas in 1919.

University of Texas-Pan American

in Edinburg was established in 1927 as a community college and later became Pan American University. It became part of the University of Texas System in 1989.

University of Texas of the Permian Basin,

is in Odessa. The university was established in 1969.

University of Texas at San Antonio

was established in 1969. It includes a museum called the Institute of Texan Cultures.

University of Texas at Tyler

opened in 1971 as Texas Eastern University. It became part of the University of Texas System in 1979.

Health-related institutions

in the system are the Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas; the Medical Branch at Galveston; the Health Science Centers at Houston, San Antonio, and Tyler; and M. D. Anderson Cancer Center at Houston.
