Torque

Torque << tawrk >> is the amount of twisting effort that a force or forces exert on an object. The torque around any axis (reference line) is calculated by multiplying the force by the distance between the line of force and the axis. The torque increases as the force moves farther from the axis. For this reason, a wheel turns more easily when the force is applied farther from the center. In the inch-pound system of measurement customarily used in the United States, torque is measured in pound-feet. See also Force ; Lever .
