Tubman, William V. S. (1895-1971), was president of Liberia from 1944 until his death on July 23, 1971. Educated in Liberia, he became a lawyer, and later a senator and associate justice of the Liberian Supreme Court. As president, he worked for progress in health, agriculture, and education. Tubman was born on Nov. 29, 1895, in Harper, Liberia.
