Tucumán (pop. 548,866) is a city in northwestern Argentina. Its full name is San Miguel de Tucumán. Tucumán lies at the foot of the Andes Mountains. It is the capital of the province of Tucumán.
Tucumán serves as the chief commercial center of northwestern Argentina. It is an important center of sugar production. Irrigated sugar cane fields lie outside the city. Other important industries in Tucumán include meat, milk, and grain processing. The National University of Tucumán is in the city. Tucumán was founded by Spanish settlers in 1565. Parts of the city still have Spanish colonial architecture. Argentina’s declaration of independence was signed in Tucumán in 1816.
