Tyrrhenian << tih REE nee uhn >> Sea is a part of the Mediterranean Sea. It is enclosed by the western mainland of Italy and the islands of Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily. The Tyrrhenian Sea has an area of about 60,000 square miles (155,400 square kilometers). It is sometimes called the Tuscan Sea. The Italian name for it is Mare Tirreno. The Tyrrhenian Sea joins the Ligurian Sea to the north and is linked to the Ionian Sea by the Strait of Messina to the south. Chief ports on its shores include Naples and Palermo.
