Aegis, << EE jihs >>, in Greek and Roman mythology, was the name of the shield or breastplate made for the Greek god Zeus (called Jupiter in Roman mythology) by the god Hephaestus. Zeus created thunder with it. The goddess Athena, Zeus’s daughter, carried it as a sign of authority when she went on missions for her father. In its center was the head of Medusa, which is said to have had the power of turning men to stone.
