Bevilacqua, Anthony Joseph

Bevilacqua, << `behv` uh LAHK kwuh, >> Anthony Joseph (1923-2012), served as a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church from 1991 to 2012. Pope John Paul II appointed him to that position. The pope had named Bevilacqua archbishop of Philadelphia in 1988 and accepted his resignation as archbishop in 2003.

Bevilacqua was born on June 17, 1923, in Brooklyn, a borough of New York City. He was ordained a priest in 1949. He earned a master’s degree in political science and doctorates in canon law and civil law. Between 1968 and 1980, Bevilacqua taught canon law at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, New York. He was successively assistant chancellor, vice chancellor, and chancellor of the diocese of Brooklyn between 1965 and 1980. In 1980, Bevilacqua was ordained auxiliary bishop of Brooklyn. From 1983 to 1988, he was bishop of the diocese of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Bevilacqua died on Jan. 31, 2012.
