Vaduz, << VAH doots >> (pop. 5,053), is the capital and largest city of the principality of Liechtenstein. It lies in an Alpine valley on the Rhine River. The Vaduz castle stands on a mountain above the city. The reigning prince of Liechtenstein lives there.
Vaduz is a trade and industry center. It has many banks. The city’s cultural and educational institutions include the Liechtenstein Museum of Art and the Liechtenstein University of Applied Sciences.
Vaduz was founded in the Middle Ages, probably by the mid-1100’s. It was acquired by Johann-Adam Liechtenstein, a prince from Vienna, in 1712.
