Vardon, Harry

Vardon, Harry (1870-1937), a British golfer, was one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Vardon was the only player to win the British Open championship six times. He won the tournament in 1896, 1898, 1899, 1903, 1911, and 1914. He also won the United States Open in 1900. Vardon was born on May 9, 1870, in Grouville, Jersey. He died on March 20, 1937. In his honor, the Vardon Trophy was established in 1937. The trophy is awarded annually to the golfer with the year’s best scoring average on the Professional Golfers’ Association of America (PGA) tour.
