West Indies, University of the (UWI), is a regional institution of higher learning in the Caribbean. The university was founded in 1948 with the support of London University. It achieved independent status in 1962. UWI has campuses in Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad. It also has distance education centers in Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Turks and Caicos Islands. In distance learning, students use communications technology, including television, fax machines, and the Internet, to gain access to educational resources.
