Wewak (pop. 52,094) is the provincial capital for the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea. It stands on a high headland on the central north coast.
Wewak is the main commercial and industrial center for both East and West Sepik provinces. Both provincial and national highways serve the town. Wewak is the headquarters of the second battalion of the Pacific Islands Regiment, a unit of Papua New Guinea’s army.
The town has several international hotels, and the number of tourists visiting the area has increased steadily. Wewak has three provincial high schools, one national high school, and a teachers’ college. Wewak’s provincial hospital serves both East and West Sepik. Wewak is an exporting center for cocoa, coffee, and copra (dried coconut). Sepik artifacts are famous throughout the world and are bought by collectors from dealers in Wewak.
