Whitewash is a white mixture made from whiting, glue, water, common salt, flour, and unslaked lime. It is used as a coating on outside walls of basements and lighthouses, and on fences and other structures where paint is too expensive to be practical. A heavy coating of whitewash on rough plaster, concrete, or wood helps protect the surfaces against moisture and dirt.
