Whitman, Narcissa

Whitman, Narcissa (1808-1847), was a missionary teacher to the Native American people of the Pacific Northwest. Born on March 14, 1808, in Prattsburg, New York, Narcissa Prentiss married the missionary Marcus Whitman in 1836. She was one of the first white women to journey overland to the Northwest. The couple began a mission among the Cayuse tribe at Waiilatpu, in what is now Washington. Native American warriors killed the Whitmans and several other people on Nov. 29, 1847.
