Moody, Helen Wills (1905-1998), was an American tennis champion. She won the singles title at the United States Championships (now the U.S. Open) seven times, Wimbledon in England eight times, and the French Open four times. She also won the gold medal in women’s singles and doubles at the 1924 Summer Olympic Games. She was noted for her ability to hit the ball harder than any woman she faced. Her unemotional manner earned her the nickname “Little Miss Poker Face.” .
Helen Wills was born on Oct. 6, 1905, in Centerville, California. She married the American stockbroker Frederick Moody in 1929 and then played as Helen Wills Moody. She retired in 1938. She died on Jan. 1, 1998.
