Birdwood, William Riddell

Birdwood, William Riddell (1865-1951), Baron of Anzac and Totnes, commanded the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) in Egypt, the Gallipoli Peninsula, and France during World War I (1914-1918). In 1918, he was appointed to the British Fifth Army, and in 1925, he was made commander in chief, with the rank of field marshal. Birdwood was born in Kirkee, India, on Sept. 13, 1865. He was educated at Clifton College and Sandhurst Military Academy in England. He died on May 17, 1951. See also ANZAC.
