Wrocław << VRAWTS lahf >> (pop. 672,929) is a city in Poland that serves as a rail center and river port. It lies in southwestern Poland on the Oder River. Leading products of Wrocław include computers, machinery, and textiles. The city is home to the University of Wrocław and a cathedral that dates from the 1100’s. Wrocław became part of Poland in the 900’s. Austria took over the city in 1526, and Prussia seized it in 1742. Wrocław became part of Germany in 1871. Its German name was Breslau. When World War II ended in 1945, Poland regained control of the city.
