Yorkshire terrier, sometimes called the Yorkie, is a breed of toy dog named for the English county in which it originated. Weavers in northern England developed the breed in the 1850’s. They wanted a dog bold enough to kill rats, especially in the clothing mills, but small enough to be carried in a pocket. In the late 1800’s, the Yorkie became a fashionable pet with Europe’s high society.
The Yorkshire terrier has long, silky hair. Its coat is steel-blue with golden-tan. It stands 6 to 9 inches (15 to 23 centimeters) tall at the shoulder and weighs 4 to 7 pounds (1.8 to 3.2 kilograms). The Yorkie is feisty, independent, and intelligent. It is a quick learner and a great companion, but it may not do well with young children.
