Zuckerman, Lord (1904-1993), was chief scientific adviser to the government of the United Kingdom from 1964 to 1971. His main duty was to advise the foreign secretary on the scientific aspects of disarmament. At the same time, he also served as chief scientific adviser to the secretary of state for defense. Between 1949 and 1964, Zuckerman served on various government scientific committees and advisory boards.
Solly Zuckerman was born on May 30, 1904, in Cape Town, South Africa. He graduated from the University of Cape Town and became a teacher of anatomy there in 1923. He was appointed professor of anatomy at the University of Birmingham in England in 1945. His books include The Social Life of Monkeys and Apes (1932) and A New System of Anatomy (1961). He received a life peerage and became Baron Zuckerman in 1971. He died on April 1, 1993.
