Brouwer, Adriaen, << BROW uhr, AY dree AHN >> (1605 or 1606-1638), was a Flemish painter. He was famous for his lively and expressive pictures of peasant and lower-class life. This subject had been popularized by the Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder in the 1500’s. Brouwer stressed the squalid side of peasant life–smoking, drinking, and fighting. But his paintings still appealed to upper-class patrons. Brouwer was born in Oudenaarde, Belgium.
