Dodds, Harold Willis (1889-1980), an American educator, served as president of Princeton University from 1933 to 1957. He stated his educational philosophy in an essay: “We are not put into the world to sit still and know; we are put here to act.” He served on the executive board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1946. Dodds was born in Utica, Pennsylvania, on June 28, 1889. He graduated from Grove City (Pennsylvania) College and received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He also taught at Purdue University and Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University). Dodds died in Hightstown, New Jersey, on Oct. 25, 1980.
