Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is an organization for junior high and high school students interested in the family and in consumer sciences. Chapters exist throughout the United States and in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The organization is also known as FCCLA.
Members of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America participate in national projects and local chapter activities. They learn about personal, family, social, and career issues in the fields of family and consumer sciences, which are sometimes called home economics. FCCLA programs also help young people develop skills in planning, goal-setting, problem-solving, decision-making, and communication. Adult advisers guide students in these activities.
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America honors its members through the STAR Events program. STAR Events awards achievements in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and occupational preparation. STAR stands for Students Taking Action with Recognition.
FCCLA was founded in 1945 as Future Homemakers of America. In 1999, the organization changed its name to Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. Its national headquarters are in Reston, Virginia.
