Krumgold, Joseph (1908-1980), was an American author of children’s books. He was the first writer to win the Newbery Medal twice. He won his first medal in 1954 for …And Now Miguel (1953). The novel tells about a Spanish family who raised sheep in New Mexico for many years. Krumgold won his second Newbery Medal in 1960 for Onion John (1959), a story about a boy’s friendship with a lovable old immigrant man. He also wrote the children’s novels Henry 3 (1967) and The Most Terrible Turk (1969). In addition, Krumgold gained recognition as a producer of documentary films.
Krumgold was born on April 9, 1908, in Jersey City, New Jersey. He died on July 10, 1980.
