Queens Midtown Tunnel

Queens Midtown Tunnel runs 85 feet (26 meters) under the East River to connect midtown Manhattan and Queens. Construction began in 1936 and was completed in 1940. It has twin tubes, each over 6,000 feet (1,800 meters) long and with roadways 21 feet (6 meters) wide. The tunnel can handle more than 28 million vehicles a year.
