Teletypesetter (TTS) was a device used to transmit and typeset reports from news wire services. It was an electrical machine similar to a teletypewriter (see Teletypewriter ). A teletypesetter sent copy over long distances and at the same time punched holes in paper tape. The tape was fed into a typesetting machine, and the machine automatically set the copy in the type used to print a newspaper.
The leading news wire services began using teletypesetters to send reports to newspapers in the early 1950’s. They had stopped using the devices by the early 1980’s. Today, wire service copy is transmitted to almost all newspapers by satellite. The copy is fed directly into a computer and then edited on a video display terminal.
