Handwriting-recognition software

Handwriting-recognition software is a computer program that translates handwritten letters, numbers, and other characters into individual computer codes, as if entered by a keyboard. This software usually works with a digitizing tablet, a device that enables the user to write words or draw pictures directly into the computer using a penlike stylus. Digitizing tablets are often built into the displays of pen-based computers and other handheld devices.

Handwriting-recognition software can be extremely accurate when used with neatly printed symbols of uniform size and shape. Symbols written in longhand are much more difficult to recognize—mainly because of individual differences in writing. Some programs require the user to learn to enter symbols with special strokes. Others allow users to enter symbols the way they would normally write them on paper. As symbols are entered, the program can often suggest the correct word based on recognition of the first few characters. Some handwriting recognition programs can be trained by a user to recognize their unique handwriting.
