Dillon, C. Douglas (1909-2003), was appointed secretary of the treasury in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. He served until 1965. An investment banker, Dillon served as President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s undersecretary of state for economic affairs and later as undersecretary of state.
Clarence Douglass Dillon was born on Aug. 21, 1909, in Geneva, Switzerland. He later shortened his first name to C. and dropped the second s from his middle name, making it Douglas. He graduated from Harvard University in 1931. He entered his father’s Wall Street firm, Dillon, Read, & Co. Inc., and served as chairman of the board from 1946 to 1953. Dillon was ambassador to France from 1953 to 1957. He died on Jan. 10, 2003.
