Hinshelwood, Sir Cyril (1897-1967), a British chemist, teacher, and author, shared the 1956 Nobel Prize for chemistry with Nikolai Semenov. He received the award for his research in chemical kinetics (changes of motion) and its application to bacterial cells. Hinshelwood wrote Kinetics of Chemical Change in Gaseous Systems (1926) and Thermodynamics for Students of Chemistry (1926). He was born in London and graduated from Oxford University.
