Sandow, << SAN doh, >> Eugen (1867-1925), a German strong man, performed great feats of strength in Europe and the United States. His fame helped make physical culture and body building popular. Sandow was weak and sickly as a child. But he studied anatomy and built up his muscles. Sandow trained British soldiers during World War I (1914-1918). Sandow was born on April 2, 1867, in Königsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia). His original name was Friedrich Wilhelm Müller. He died on Oct. 14, 1925.
