Carey, James Barron

Carey, James Barron (1911-1973), an American labor leader, gained wide recognition for his fight against Communist influence in unions. He became president of the United Electrical Workers (UE) in 1936 when it joined the Committee for Industrial Organization. The committee was a forerunner of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). He lost this post in 1941 because of his anti-Communist stand. When the CIO expelled the UE on charges of Communist domination, Carey organized the International Union of Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers (IUE) in 1949. He served as president of this union from 1949 to 1965. Carey was born in Philadelphia.
