Coverdale, Miles (1488?-1568), a bishop of Exeter, England, became famous for his English translation of the Bible in 1535. He used William Tyndale’s English version of the New Testament and Tyndale’s Old Testament through Chronicles. Coverdale translated other portions of his Bible from the Latin Vulgate and from Martin Luther’s German translation. Coverdale also helped produce the Great Bible, also known as the Cromwell Bible and Cranmer’s Bible, during the reign of King Henry VIII. Coverdale was born in Yorkshire and educated at Cambridge.
