Fisher, Carl Graham

Fisher, Carl Graham (1874-1939), helped originate the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He also served as its president. The speedway was originally built in 1909 as a proving ground for automobiles. In 1911, it became the site of the Indianapolis 500 , a 500-mile (805-kilometer) race held each Memorial Day weekend. Fisher promoted the Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental road in the United States, and financed the building of Miami Beach, Florida. He was born on Jan. 12, 1874, in Greensburg, Indiana. He opened a bicycle shop during the 1890’s and later became an Indianapolis automobile dealer. Fisher died on July 15, 1939.
