Hubbard, Elbert

Hubbard, Elbert (1856-1915), was an American lecturer, publisher, editor, and essayist. He wrote the essay “A Message to Garcia” (1899), an account of an American Army officer’s daring search through the Cuban jungles for the Cuban rebel Calixto Garcia Iniguez. The officer carried word of American support for the rebel.

Hubbard founded the Roycroft Shop in East Aurora, New York, in 1895. It specialized in fine bookbinding and other handicrafts. He also attracted wide attention as the publisher of two magazines, The Philistine and The Fra. He described the homes of authors and artists in monthly pamphlets called Little Journeys. Hubbard was born in Bloomington, Illinois. He died in the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915.
