Roebling, << ROHB lihng, >> John Augustus (1806-1869), was an American civil engineer who pioneered in designing suspension bridges. He started the first wirerope and cable factory in the United States. He designed the Brooklyn Bridge, using large cables composed of parallel strands of steel wire with a continuous soft-wire wrapping as protection against weather. Roebling died after his foot was crushed while he was making surveys for that bridge. He was born in Muhlhausen, Germany.
