Salten, Felix

Salten, Felix (1869-1945), was an Austrian author best known for his children’s novel Bambi (1923). The story describes the adventures of a young deer growing up in a forest. Walt Disney based his animated motion picture Bambi (1942) on the book. In addition to several other children’s books, Salten also wrote dramatic criticism, novels, and plays.

Salten was born on Sept. 6, 1869, in Budapest, Hungary. His real name was Siegmund Salzmann. He spent most of his life in Vienna, Austria, but fled to Switzerland in 1938 after the Nazis took control of Austria. He died on Oct. 8, 1945.
