Talmadge, Herman Eugene (1913-2002), a Democrat, was governor of Georgia from 1948 to 1955. He had previously been selected governor by the state legislature to fill the vacancy created when his father, Eugene Talmadge, died in 1946. But after 67 days in office, the state supreme court ruled the appointment unconstitutional. Talmadge served in the United States Senate from 1957 to 1981. In 1973, he became a member of the Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities, which investigated the Watergate scandals.
Like his father, Talmadge advocated states’ rights. He wrote You and Segregation (1955). He was born on Aug. 9, 1913, in Talfair County, near McRae, Georgia. He died on March 21, 2002.
