Badoglio, Pietro, << bah DAW lyoh, PYEH troh >> (1871-1956), was an Italian soldier and statesman. He became head of the Italian government after Benito Mussolini was overthrown in July 1943. Badoglio surrendered Italy to the Allies in September 1943, during World War II. He served as premier only until after the capture of Rome in June 1944. Badoglio served as chief of staff of the Italian Army in 1919 and again from 1925 to 1940. He commanded the Italian forces in the invasion of Ethiopia in 1935 and 1936. He was born in Grazzano Monferrato.
