Fuller, Alfred Carl

Fuller, Alfred Carl (1885-1973), founded the Fuller Brush Company. He started making brushes in Somerville, Massachusetts, in 1906. Fuller developed his company by using the door-to-door selling method. Fuller salespeople called at about 9 of every 10 American homes and sold more than $800 million worth of Fuller brushes and other products in the firm’s first 50 years. In the 1980’s, as more women began working, the firm began selling its products using mail-order catalogs, in addition to its door-to-door sales force.

Fuller was born in Welsford, in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, on Jan. 13, 1885. He died on Dec. 4, 1973, in Hartford, Connecticut.
