Crerar, Henry Duncan Graham

Crerar, << KREE rahr, >> Henry Duncan Graham (1888-1965), distinguished himself as commander of the First Canadian Army in the invasion of the Rhineland and western Netherlands in World War II. He served as chief of the Canadian General Staff in 1940 and 1941, and commanded the First Canadian Corps in Britain and Italy from 1942 to 1944. He was noted for his skill and determination.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Crerar studied at Upper Canada College, at Lausanne, Switzerland, and at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1914 as an artillery captain and served throughout World War I. Crerar retired from the army in 1945.
