Massys, << MAHS ys, >> Quentin (1465?-1530), was the leading painter in Antwerp, Belgium, in the early 1500’s. He painted traditional religious themes and satirical subjects, mocking folly, greed, and hypocrisy. He also painted portraits in which he caught his models in lifelike poses. His altar paintings include The Holy Kinship and The Lamentation of Christ. His works reveal the influence in Belgium and the Netherlands of the art of the Italian Renaissance, especially of Leonardo da Vinci. Massys was born in Louvain.
