Phaedra, << FEE druh, >> in Greek mythology, was the wife of Theseus, a great king of early Athens. She fell in love with Hippolytus, who was Theseus’ son and her stepson. But he would have nothing to do with her. To get revenge, she told Theseus that Hippolytus had insulted her. Theseus banished his son and asked Poseidon to punish him. As Hippolytus drove his chariot along the shore, a monster appeared from the sea and caused the horses to bolt. Hippolytus was killed, and Phaedra hanged herself in remorse.
